Why Grasped?

Megan's *Why*

Vanessa and I have worked in special education in a few different districts in the San Francisco Bay Area. We have worked with some incredible people and we have also seen some incredible people leave our districts or the profession entirely. We have also seen great conflict between districts and families that ultimately draw the focus away from what is important and should be at the center of every conversation: the student. From our experiences, we saw a need for Grasped.

G: Guidance - There are websites and services our there that teach educators how to move into different career fields. We would like to focus on helping our peers move up the career ladder within education. There are wonderful educators out there that could do exceptional work in leadership roles. Let's talk about how to decide which path is right for you and how to get there. I will share some strategies and tips based on how in less than 5 years, I more than doubled my salary and moved into a management role that I love.

R: Resources - There are so many resources out there for teachers already. How are we different? As educators, we all know the "I Do, We Do, You Do" model. Let's apply it to some key parts of the education process, in particular the IEP process. Our video walkthroughs are designed to guide you through these important processes. Let's practice taking IEP notes by watching a simulated IEP meeting and discussing how to capture relevant information in an objective manner. Let's walk through how to write a legally compliant Prior Written Notice. We will provide the templates, but more importantly, we will provide the practice and the mentoring.

A: Advocacy - We truly believe parents can be their children's best advocates. Let's look at advocacy and discuss how to determine if you would benefit from a Special Education advocate, how to know when you've run your course with your advocate, and when it may be best for you to be your own advocate. In my time as a program specialist and program manager, my goal has always been for full and transparent collaboration between home and school. Let's talk about how we can build relationships in order to benefit our students.

SPED: Special Education - After school programming for kids has traditionally been targeted towards neurotypical children. Our students with exceptional needs could also benefit from after school programming tailored to their needs. We are here to provide that. Let's do a cooking lesson with Vanessa. We will provide a list of ingredients, but also scaffolded worksheets that you can print our and use with your child. Let's address those important preacademic, academic, social, language, and motor skills in a fun video lesson each week! We have a big vision for where we want to take this SPED channel and are excited to partner with you to bring this vision to life.
